AfriYAN has New Leadership - A Young Woman Now Heads the Network.

The General Assembly of AfriYAN was held on 1st December 2011 at the headquarters of the African Union, Addis Ababa. AfriYAN is a network of young people in Africa on Population and Development. Young people in this network gather to intensify efforts in the fight against HIV / AIDS and Sexual and Reproductive Commodities. This General Assembly came at the end of an orientation workshop for young leaders on Sexual and Reproductive Health Commodities Security, which was held from 28th to 30th November 2011.

The General Assembly was attended by the Regional Advisor of UNFPA, Dr. Akinyele Dairo Senior, focal points in reproductive health among youth, regional advisers and some staffs of UNFPA country offices . It is about forty young member of Afri YAN representing all regions of Africa who participated in the General Assembly during which he has had an overhaul of the office network. 

Christelle Mbéré from Congo and Benedict F. Kikove from Tanzania were elected as President and Vice President of AfriYAN respectively for a term of two years. The Executive Secretariat is composed of Fourier Thibo (Chad), Yemurai Nyon (Zimbabwe), Caleb Thole (Malawi), Hamaould Sovereign (Mauritania) and Samuli Kossi (Ghana).Among other highlights of the ceremony, the report of the outgoing President Gunston Chola, reporting of activities of different parts of Africa and the presentation of recommendations and resolutions. During this assembly, Dr. Akinyele Dairo took the opportunity to express UNFPA's readiness to support young people and the network.

UNFPA has always been a leader in actions to encourage, support and protect young people. Dr. Dairo Senior did not fail to commend the maturity and sense of responsibility found in three years in the network Afri YAN.

In closing, the work, the new president of Afri YAN, Christelle Mbéré said "the time is more long speech. This is the time for action. And we must act together for the cause of Afri YAN ".
